Steve will be the Moderator at the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education's day long seminar on "Mortgage Foreclosure, Short Sales and Distress Property: Latest Developments". The program will be held at the University of Illinois College of Business, 200 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois, and will feature attorneys presenting on the topics of The Illinois Supreme Court Mortgage Foreclosure Committee, Bankruptcy Issues Concerns and Strategies, Loan Modifications, Receiverships, Chapter 11 and Commercial Foreclosures, and Updates on Mortgage Foreclosure process and proceedings.

Steve will speak on mortgage foreclosure and related issues at the Illinois State Bar Association's Annual Solo and Small Firm Practice Seminar to be held at the Westin Northwest Chicago, September 13-15, 2012. This is the premier event for Illinois solo and small firm attorneys, and provides an intensive educational and networking opportunity. Steve's session on mortgage foreclosure will be on the Substantive Law Track.

The Illinois Supreme Court Mortgage Foreclosure Committee on the reform of the practice and procedure for foreclosures will convene a public meeting at the Bilandic Building, 160 North LaSalle Street, Chicago, Illinois, and Steve has been placed on the agenda to speak and offer comments on the proposals to the Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee. The speakers on the agenda will be representing MERS, title companies, and a number of representatives of attorneys representing lenders in foreclosure, (Codilis, Pierce, Fisher, Noonan and Nevel), but Steve will be there to present the views of the defendants in foreclosure to the Supreme Court Committee.

Steve Bashaw participated in the taping of a panel discussion for the Illinois State Bar Association on "Responding to Foreclosure" on January 9, 2011. The half-hour program will be televised twice in March, 2012, as part of the ISBA public service program "Illinois Law", which airs every Tuesday at 10:00pm CST on Cable Access Channel 21 in the Chicago Area. Steve's discussion on the panel with his colleagues, Erica Minchella and Samuel Levine, attorneys who concentrate and routinely handle mortgage foreclosure cases, focused the foreclosure process, responding to a default, short sales, loan modifications and the timing of the foreclosure process.

Beginning in March, 2010, The Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education is serializing Steve's most recent update of "Mortgagors in Distress - Representing Defendants in Residential Foreclosure". The the First of Five Parts covers an Introduction, a Practical Approach for practicing attorneys, and the Client Interview. The Second Part will cover Defenses such as Reinstatement, analyzing the Pleadings, Standing (a 'hot topic'), Circumstances of the Loan and Default, and Discovery. The Third Part will present Alternatives to Foreclosure (Deed in Lieu, Consent Judgments, Short Sales and Modifications). The Illinois State Bar Association Real Estate Section Council will present a continuing legal education seminar "Mortgagors in Distress" on April 24, 2008 in Springfield, Illinois and on May 1, 2008 in Lombard, Illinois.  This day long seminar will provide presentations to lawyers covering a review of the Illinois Mortgage Foreclosure Law , Mortgage Foreclosure Defense, Alternatives to Foreclosure, Statutes Affecting Mortgagors, Purchasing at Foreclosure Sales, Commercial Foreclosures and Mortgage Rescue Fraud.  Steve will participate in the program as a presenter and panel member.

Steve Bashaw, together with Patrick Williams and Kent Gaertner, present a consumer's view of foreclosure and bankruptcy for pro-se litigants at the DuPage County Bar Association seminar room, 5:30pm - 7:00pm.

Steve will participate in the DuPage Bar Association "Foreclosure Information Seminar" panel discussion at the DuPage Bar Center in Wheaton, Illinois. The program is a response to the extraordinary increase in number of foreclosure cases filed in DuPage County, and focuses on explaining the foreclosure process to consumers and pro se defendants.

February 13-14, 2008

On February 13 & 14, 2008, the Illinois Institute of Continuing Education will present the 4th Annual Real Estate Short Courts at the Hilton, Lisle, Illinois covering a significant number of practice areas relating to real estate law. As in the past, Steve Bashaw will open the two day course with the real estate caselaw update presenting the last year's appellate decisions that will be of interest to attorneys practicing real estate law in its many aspects.

Steve will present the cases and commentary on attorney's modification of real estate contracts at the Chicago Title Real Estate Seminar, "Clearing Your Way to Closing". The seminar will be held at Maggiano's Little Italy in Oak Brook Center from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and include a variety of speakers on topics of interest to lawyers in real estate transactions. Steve's materials will include cases in the area of attorney modifications as well as articles on this timely and sometimes volatile topic.

February 6-7, 2007

Steve will deliver the Real Estate Case Law Update to the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education's two day Real Estate Symposium on February 6-7, 2007.  The Symposium, is being offered for the third year, and  gathers Illinois Real Estate lawyers from all over the state for two days to hear a number of speakers addressing current issues and developments in real estate law.  Steve, together with Joseph Fortunato and Mary Lou Lowder-Kent, are the first speakers on the first day, giving the attendees and other speakers an update of case law and legislation which has changed the practice of real estate law in the preceeding year as the "kick-off" for the sessions that follow.

Steve has begun a series of mortgage foreclosure seminars for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. The monthly lunch seminars are specifically designed for attorneys who are interested in volunteering for CVLS how to review and defend homeowners against forelcosure. The materials are the recently updated and significantly expanded "Nuts and Bolts of Residential Mortgage Foreclosure". The program is presented through the Access to Justice program in conjunction with the Harold I. Levine Center for Housing. The first lunch discussion on March 28, 2006, covered an overview of the foreclosure process and proceeding. The second lunch discussion on April 20, 2006 looked at pre-complaint issues and strategies and the reviewed a number of typical foreclosure complaints, pointing out areas for attorneys to focus and attack. The third lunch discussion will be on May 16, 2006, and will concentrate on jurisdiction, publication, venue and pleading defenses. Subsequent monthly lunch discussions will follow to cover foreclosure judgment, redemption, reinstatement, sales, confirmation of sales and possession. The materials are provided for attendees before hand in order to facilitate discussion, and can be obtained by email directed to Peter Ashmore, Director of the Harold I. Levine Center for Housing.

Steve is currently teaching "Real Estate Principals" at the College of DuPage.  Recognized as one of the finest community colleges in the United States, this course is a required prerequisite for the State of Illinois examination for real estate salespersons, and a great opportunity to impact future REALTORS.

On November 15-16, 2001, Steve will attend the "Predatory Lending Training" program co-sponsored by the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation and St. Louis University School of Law, funded by a cy pres award in Magone v. First USA Bank, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois, focusing on legal claims and defenses to predatory lending activities.
