Steven B. Bashaw

Steven B. Bashaw is principal of Steven B. Bashaw, P.C., with offices in Lisle, Illinois, and concentrating his practice in real estate litigation, real estate law, appellate practice and foreclosures, having represented financial institutions and defending debtors alike.

Steve is the past Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association Real Estate Section Council, Chair of the Case Law Subcommittee, a member of the of ISBA Assembly, and a Director of the Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association. 

A frequent continuing legal education speaker on case law updates, mortgage foreclosure, and real estate law for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, The Illinois State Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, DuPage County Bar Association, Kane County Bar Association and Lake County Bar Association. Steve is the author of articles and he has contributed to the Illinois Mortgage Foreclosure Practices Handbook with 'The Nuts and Bolts of Foreclosure' and 'Mortgagors in Distress Representing Defendants in Foreclosure'. In 2009, Steve was honored as the receipent of the Edward J. Lewis II Pro Bono Service Award from the Chicago Bar Foundation and Chicago Bar Association in recognition of his work in assisting and training volunteer lawyers in mortgage foreclosure defense for various legal assistance providers, including Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, Legal Assistance Foundation and the Access to Justice program in Cook County, Illinois. 

Steve has presented the case law updates annually for the Illinois State Bar Association, various local bar associations for a number of years, and contributes to the Real Estate Law Flashpoints for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education website, and at http://www.bashawlaw.com. His annual case law update of real estate decisions in Illinois has been published in the Southern Illinois University Law Journal and are published annually by the Illinois State Bar Association Real Estate Section Council.

Mr. Bashaw has represented Citicorp Mortgage, Citibank, Knutson Mortgage, DMR Financial Services, Bank of America, Draper & Kramer, G.E. Capital Mortgage Services, Source One Mortgage, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and St. Paul Bank, in addition to individual investors and developers, and currently concentrates his practice in the area of mortgage foreclosure defense, real estate litigation and appellate practice on behalf of defendants, individuals and consumers.

Publications and Speaking Engagements. Mr. Bashaw has been an Adjunct faculty member of DePaul University School of Law and the College of DuPage, Real Estate law. He is a frequent lecturer for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, Illinois State Bar Association Law Ed Series, Chicago Bar Association and the Kane County Bar Association. He has been the author of the "Real Estate Law 'Keypoint' Update" on the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education Web site. Mr. Bashaw is a guest speaker and contributing author, Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, "A Practical Approach to Liens on Real Estate", November, 1996 and repeated March, 1998; and a speaker for the Illinois State Bar Association, Real Estate Section Council, Real Estate Update, 1997 - "Mortgage Foreclosure 'Nuts and Bolts' , Recent Cases and Pitfalls for Practitioners," October 1997, 2000. A full archive of announcements and speaking engagements since 2000 is available here.

Community Involvement. A Mason since 1987, Steve is a Past Master of Hinsdale Lodge No. 934, and its Secretary, and a member of the Chicago Valley of the Scottish Rite and Medinah Temple, where he is a member of the Medinah Motor Corps Drill Competition Team.  He is a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Instructor and teaches basic and advanced motorcycle safety courses for the University of Illinois, Champaign.

Steven B. Bashaw was selected as a Leading American Attorney in the area of Real Estate Law.  To be selected, attorneys must receive multiple recommendations from their peers in a statewide survey conducted by Leading Attorney Network, Inc.  Fewer than 8% of the state's attorneys are Leading American Attorneys.
